It's the only time Mortal Kombat came together as a narrative of any kind of worth since.

I like MKX's more grandiose, cinematic feel, but I didn't like how it slimmed the gameplay. I prefer MK9's story mode for the pure nostalgia the re-telling of MK1-3, and the amount of gameplay. Scorpion's the Starlord of the MK Universe, though. I didn't really mind any of the new characters, and I liked how most of the veteran characters were portrayed.

MKX didn't really re-tell MK4's story, it instead went in it's own direction, which I think is an admirable way for the series to go. I also didn't really care for the quick time events, but I guess they were a way for players to be a bit more interactive for the big choreographed fight scenes. There were only 12 chapters in MKX, while still having the same four fights per chapter like MK9, so 16+ fights were missed in MKX's story, and there were a number of characters you did not end up playing in MKX, but I guess the story was such that there was no room for any of the other characters. As a result, this gave us less actual gameplay in the story mode. There were lengthy scenes with good motion capture/fight choreography, and the cutscenes in general were longer than MK9's. So, MKX's was much more grandiose, much more of a "movie", if you will. Thus, you played 64+ matches in MK9's story mode, which was a meaty story mode with both lots of cutscenes and lots of gameplay. Each chapter had four fights, with some chapters adding five fights. MK9's story mode had 16 chapters, and you played as a different character in each chapter. There were a lot of chapters, and thus there was a lot of gameplay in the story mode. MK9's story literally picks up from where the MK Armageddon opening cinematic left off, which I fucking loved. That said, there was a *ton* of fanservice for the older MK games. Sort of like one character walks up to the other, one of them says "I don't like your face". MK9's story had virtually no fight choreography, and a lot of fights were just kind of thrown together. But, when I compare the two, I can see that there is a marked difference between the two. I didn't like it as much as MK9's story mode. but MK11 just has her there with no explanation for her absence in this game. Jade is curiously absent and they seemed to be setting her up for something. The game also sets up a lot of ideas that were just dropped for MK11 due to the change in writers. By killing off most of the heroes in MK9, the only aspect of MK Lore remaining is the Special Forces which was always the most boring of all the factions in MK Lore. which isn't a good thing since I didn't consider it very compelling. The focus is primarily on the Cage family. why? In a universe like MK where magic and resurrections are aplenty how is this the end of all hopes? Makes no sense. Scorpion finally kills Quan Chi but this seemingly dooms the revenants to stay as such. Kotal Khan also jumps the shark after D'Vorah kills Mileena. sure is a pity they don't do anything with most of it. The Outworld Civil War is an interesting idea. "Dealing with a snare" that causes him to travel the realms. Raiden is rather poorly written out so he can't solve any problems. They did this to make Liu Kang and Kitana "more interesting" as they were considered "vanilla." (Making good aligned characters evil particularly against their will does not make them interesting) The previous heroes are all stuck as generic revenants and just downgraded to useless henchmen.

Also, missed opportunity to not have Frost be part of the Kombat Kids. It felt like an apology for that Cyber-Sub-Zero abomination. Sub-Zero is just back to where he was in the original timeline. Scorpion's transformation back into Hanzo and reforming the Shirai Ryu is a welcome surprise, after years of stagnation, his character finally progressed. Takeda and Kung Jin benefit from not being total copies of their predecessors in gameplay whereas Cassie is basically just a mix of Johnny Cage and Sonya and Jacqui as a character is just. Kung Jin I don't know how he can exist since Kung Lao was said to be the last living descendant of the Great Kung Lao, but he's okay. She's not that compelling or interesting, actually the only one who is Takeda who is a little bit interesting. Cassie was clearly meant to be the new hero (or heroine) of MK because the writers at the time had a love fest for Johnny Cage and Sonya and hated Liu Kang and Kitana. It obviously didn't take as they had to use time travel to bring the previous heroes back in 11. it was supposed to usher in a new generation of heroes.
